About Staveley Edge Centre
We began as Edge in this building with rented space for an office and a communal area which we turned into a free community café and warm welcome space. Then as the community and projects grew over the following 2 years we took over more of the building- this has culminated in a 10 year lease of the whole building from the Methodist Circuit!
About the Staveley Area
Once surrounded by coal mines, Staveley had a rich industrial history as a mining town as well as being home to chemical works, an ironworks foundry, and an engineering works. Since the decline of industry across the UK, some of the local colliery land has been reclaimed and repurposed, while much of it lays untouched or lined up to become developed into housing projects.
The CDRC’s Index of Multiple Deprivation identifies Staveley in the most deprived decile across England, that’s the bottom 1% in areas such as housing, education, health, and employment.

Steve Martin
Centre Co-Ordinator
Steve oversees the day-to-day running of Staveley Edge Centre and gives practical support to make sure our projects can run smoothly.
Originally from Brighton Steve served the Royal Navy for 28-years on many ships and in various shore establishments. He worked hard to live out his witness in the rather challenging environment of a messdeck on board a warship! After the Navy Steve worked for the Naval Christian Fellowship, supporting and encouraging Christians in their life and witness in the RN, Royal Marines, and Royal Fleet Auxiliary.
Steve lives in Brimington and is married to Helen, together they have two sons and four grandchildren. Steve’s hobbies include music (especially vinyl), playing guitar and running. He drives a 30 year old VW Van and a 2.8i Capri of the same vintage!!
